Perimeter
PERIMETER
Lets discuss about perimeter
For Example, to fence the garden at your house, the length required of the material for fencing is the perimeter of the garden.
Perimeter of a shape is defined as the total distance around the shape.
Perimeter Meaning
The perimeter of any two-dimensional closed shape is the total distance around it. Perimeter is the sum of all the sides of a polygon.
The formula for perimeter:
Perimeter = Sum of all sides
The perimeter will be obtained by adding the measurements of the sides/edges of the shape.
Only in the case of a circle, the perimeter is stated as the circumference of the circle.
Perimeter Of Polygons
SQUARE:
- The perimeter of the square is defined as the total length of the boundary of a square.
- In order to calculate the perimeter of the square, we will find the sum of all of its sides.
- Since, all the sides of a square are equal, for a square, with each side measuring "s" units,
Perimeter of square = Sum of all four sides
Perimeter of square = s + s + s + s
⇒ Perimeter of square = 4s, where "s" is the side length of the square
Example:
Calculate the perimeter of a square with each side measuring 6 units.
Solution:
Given: Side length of square = 6 units
We know, using the perimeter of a square formula,
Perimeter of square = 4 × Side
⇒ 4 × 6 = 24 units
RECTANGLE:
- The perimeter of the rectangle is defined as the total length of the boundary of a rectangle.
- Rectangle has four sides.
- The opposite sides are of equal length
- All angles are 90 degrees each
Perimeter of rectangle = Sum of all four sides
The perimeter of a rectangle = 2 ×(l + b)
l - length
b- breadth
EXAMPLE:
What is a perimeter of a rectangular-shaped notebook if the length of the notebook is 7 units and breadth is 4 units?
Solution:
Given: Length = 7 units and breadth = 4 units
Using perimeter of rectangle formula = 2(length+breadth)
Perimeter of a notebook = 2(7 + 4) = 22 Units
Therefore, perimeter of a notebook is 22 units.
TRIANGLE:
- Triangle has three sides
- To calculate the perimeter of a triangle, add the lengths of the sides given. The basic formula used to calculate the perimeter of a triangle is:
Perimeter of triangle = Sum of all three sides
The perimeter of a triangle = a + b + c
a, b, c = lengths of sides
Examples
What is the perimeter of an equilateral triangle whose side length is 5 cm?
Solution:
Given, length of the side of equilateral triangle is 5 cm
As we know, the equilateral triangle has all its sides equal in length.
Therefore,
Perimeter of triangle = a+b+c
Here,
a = b = c
Therefore,
Perimeter = 5+ 5+ 5= 15 cm
Quadrilateral
The perimeter of a quadrilateral = a + b + c + d
a, b, c, d = lengths of sides
Circle
The perimeter of a circle = 2 π r
r = radius
