Hello students! Today lets learn how to convert improper fraction to mixed fraction and mixed fraction to improper fraction. Before that lets recall the types of fractions .

 Kinds of Fractions

There are three types of fractions.

Types of Fractions

Proper Fraction -the numerator is less than Denominator

Improper Fraction- the numerator is greater than the Denominator

Mixed Fraction- written as a combination of a whole number and a fraction.

Converting Improper fraction to a mixed fraction

Step 1: Divide numerator with the denominator.

Step 2:  Take quotient as whole number and remainder as the numerator of proper fraction.

Step 3: The Denominator will be the same

Example 1

Convert 3/2 into Mixed Fraction.

Solution:

Given Fraction:

3/2

Divide the Numerator by the Denominator

On dividing 3 by 2

We get Quotient = 1

Remainder = 1

So, the mixed fraction is

Converting Mixed fraction to Improper Fraction:

Step 1: Multiply the denominator with the whole number.

Step 2: Add the numerator of the Fraction to the result in step 1.

Step 3: Keep the Denominator same.

Step 4: The Improper fraction is obtained .

EXAMPLE 1:

Convert the fraction 2(2/3) to improper fraction.

A combination of Whole Number and a Proper Fraction is called a Mixed Fraction Here,

Mixed fraction = 2(2/3)

  Whole Number Part = 2

Numerator = 2

Denominator = 3

Step 1: Multiply the Whole Number Part and Denominator of the Mixed Fraction

2 x 3 = 6

Step 2: Add the Numerator to the product obtained in Step 1

2 + 6 = 8

       Step 3: Keep the Denominator same.

Step 4: The Improper fraction is obtained .

8/3
